The White House

This year, the Benkendorf Family is celebrating its 100th Christmas in the White House. In 1921, my grandfather built this home and lived in it. Today my grandson, Ephraim, his wife Ashley, and their children, Anna & Leland, live there. Many family members have lived in this house over the years. As a family, we are truly blessed.

Today we are building a new family, a family of BF Farms’ customers eating meat produced on the very land where my grandfather started in 1921. This is exciting for me. It is my hope that we always provide the best for our customers.

Have a blessed Christmas, and we’ll see you next year!

Don’t squat with your spurs on.

My Accident

When a 900-pound heifer meets you head-on, you’re probably not going to come out the winner! This is what happened to me two weeks ago. I was literally blind-sided and left with 12 fractured bones. Yet, I was lucky! No head injuries and no body organs injured.

Now, the lesson learned? Both a doctor and a head trauma nurse have said that it could have been much worse had I not been as healthy and fit as I am. I am healing ahead of schedule and am told the bones will heal on their own, and will actually be stronger than before.

Yes, we make sure our animals are healthy and fit, but it’s just as important for all family members who work the farm, to eat healthy and stay fit as well.

MEAT AVAILABILITY:
We are short on roasts & short ribs, but good on all other cuts, including most steaks.
Still good with 1/8 and 1/4s too.

We have a new supply of the lean ground/organ meats package, available at Urban Agrarian, as well as BF Farms.

We also have a good supply of ground beef; 85/15 & more coming.

Stay Tuned!

I witnessed, and experienced, something that happens in the cattle industry way too much. Let me explain: We were wanting to shore up our supply of cattle as demand has really increased. A cattleman in our area, who raises the right kind of cattle from our perspective, priced us 25 of his coming yearlings. He said he would have to add $200 per head to the price because we did not allow growth steroids. He said he would lose that much by not using steroids.

Steroids, which cost $15 - $20 and can add $200 to the bottom line, is a no brainer for cattlemen. BUT, consumers are paying the price in their health. Steroids, and a multitude of questionable, additive laced foods, are what many Americans are eating.

Next year, Jayne, my wife, will be unveiling a national program dealing with what I call, “Trickery on Aisle 9”. This is something she is passionate about and is anxious to share. Stay Tuned!!

The Last Trimester

Lessons Learned on the Farm

A big lesson we have learned on the farm is how important a calf’s growth and development is during its last 3 months in its mother’s womb.

During these last 3 months, a calf is having somewhat of a growth spurt. Nutrition, and especially protein, is very important for the mother. This period is important because it can affect the natural health of that calf for its entire life.

It’s almost crazy, but this period in a calf’s life can have an effect on the quality of its meat two years down the road – when you’re sitting down at the dinner table for a nice, juicy steak! Yes, the taste and tenderness of that steak partly depends on what its mother ate during that last trimester.

When the beef industry tends to place its emphasis on the last 3 months a calf spends in the feedlot, we at BF Farms realize these last 3 months in its mother’s womb is when it begins!

Offal

Yes, “offal” is the correct name for organ meats. Many would agree they are “awful”, but organ meats offer an abundance of vitamins and minerals that we don’t normally receive in our daily diet.

BF Farms & Urban Agrarian are partnering to offer one-pound packages of 90% lean ground beef with 10% heart, liver, & kidney – all from BF Farm’s beef. And best for some folks - you can’t even taste the organ meats!

I personally encourage you to include this option in your weekly meal plans. Why? Read on…

Benefits: Beef liver is one of the most nutritious foods available. It’s rich in Vitamins B12, B6, B2, Folacin, Niacin, A, D, E, & K – along with Iron, Selenium, Zinc, and others. Check it out for yourself.

Beef heart is rich in the B vitamins, kidney is rich in omega-3 fatty acid. This is a combination that’s difficult to get.

MEAT AVAILABILITY:

The lean ground beef/organ meat blend is available from both BF Farms & UA (Urban Agrarian).

We are now booking ½ & whole beeves for December. Also, we now have a good supply of 85/15 ground beef.

Don’t squat with your spurs on.
