A Growing Movement

Taking Control! There is a small movement of families wanting to take better control of their food sources. I hear this comment often, “I would love to find a small acreage for my family to live on.” They go on to say, “We could raise our own fruits and vegetables, have chickens for eggs and meat, and just a wonderful way to raise our kids.”

The fact is, we already know families who have made this transition because of the uncertainty of the food supply and the quality of commercial foods.  Just the fact that we are in control of our family’s health, means so much.

Families who don’t have the means to move, or who just aren’t interested in an acreage, are still looking for ways to feel more food-secure.

BF Farms is researching ways to do this in small areas and in our own gardens.

Stay tuned!

Meat availability:
As for beef, most all options are available.

It’s spring lamb season. Lambs are available in April & May.

Lessons Learned on the Farm

Epigenetics

This is a word we’re going to hear more about in the future, both in cattle as well as humans. Epigenetics is the study of processes that turn genes on or off. Let me explain; exposure to pharmaceutical & toxic chemicals, diet, stress, exercise, and other environmental factors, are capable of eliciting positive or negative changes with effects on development, metabolism & health.

This process has already been confirmed in cattle. When pregnant cattle lack good nutrition, are stressed, and are exposed to chemicals & pharmaceuticals, this causes the calf to never fully develop to its genetic potential.  This then effects the fertility and length of life of this calf, as well its offspring.

Research with humans continues. I encourage you to do your own research on this subject.

We now have a good supply of ground beef with organ meats.

We also have a good supply of regular ground beef; 85/15.

Lessons Learned on the Farm

Over half of our customers order either a half or whole, custom cut beef. Why? One reason, in these uncertain times they just feel more secure when their freezer is well stocked. Just a note; BF Farms has not changed its price in 3 years; ($3.90 per pound, hanging weight, plus processing).

All BF Farms’ beef is raised without any grain, antibiotics, growth hormones and no GMO products. We try to have orders available 2 to 3 months out, year-round. Many customers order 5 to 6 months out, just to make sure they receive their meat when they know they will need it.

We use two processors, Country Home Meats in Edmond and Homestead Meats east of Guthrie. Customers may pick up their half or whole beef at the processor or we can deliver in our freezer van. Delivery on a half or whole beef starts at $50.

The White House

This year, the Benkendorf Family is celebrating its 100th Christmas in the White House. In 1921, my grandfather built this home and lived in it. Today my grandson, Ephraim, his wife Ashley, and their children, Anna & Leland, live there. Many family members have lived in this house over the years. As a family, we are truly blessed.

Today we are building a new family, a family of BF Farms’ customers eating meat produced on the very land where my grandfather started in 1921. This is exciting for me. It is my hope that we always provide the best for our customers.

Have a blessed Christmas, and we’ll see you next year!

My Accident

When a 900-pound heifer meets you head-on, you’re probably not going to come out the winner! This is what happened to me two weeks ago. I was literally blind-sided and left with 12 fractured bones. Yet, I was lucky! No head injuries and no body organs injured.

Now, the lesson learned? Both a doctor and a head trauma nurse have said that it could have been much worse had I not been as healthy and fit as I am. I am healing ahead of schedule and am told the bones will heal on their own, and will actually be stronger than before.

Yes, we make sure our animals are healthy and fit, but it’s just as important for all family members who work the farm, to eat healthy and stay fit as well.

MEAT AVAILABILITY:
We are short on roasts & short ribs, but good on all other cuts, including most steaks.
Still good with 1/8 and 1/4s too.

We have a new supply of the lean ground/organ meats package, available at Urban Agrarian, as well as BF Farms.

We also have a good supply of ground beef; 85/15 & more coming.
